A Dream Encounter with Animal Spirits.
The dream, I am reporting today, has a very unique quality to it. Sometimes, I have dream like experiences that arise from meditation. The dream on this occasion might more precisely be called a vision than a proper dream. This depends on what you or I might define a "dream" to be. If you give it a more broad definition than a dream is simply a sensory experience while one is asleep. Now if you choose to narrowly define the term dream then you might say it must have a movie like quality with some sort of narrative as well as be a sensory experience.
I am uncertain, for now, just how to categorize what I experienced and whether to call it a dream or vision, or what. I leave it open to the reader to decide for themselves. I will just record what happen here and offer my thoughts on what it all might possibly mean.
Last night, I watched this video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRfEBd7qB00&list=FLF_k4mmPaPrNInxd5geMt6A
The video is a guided meditation that facilitates a meeting between you and your sprit guides. Judging by the comments posted on the video many people have their own unique experiences to report following the meditation. Everyone who does it experiences and sees something unique and special to themselves.
In my dream I see a 100 pound burlap bag of wheat laying in a barn amidst bales of loose straw or hay. I see a small hole in the bag. A mouse has burrowed his way into the bag and is feasting on the grain. The mouse stares back at me, with his tiny little eyes, as he chews away on the grain. I look to my left and see a very large lizard. I seems frozen. Is it literally frozen? Is it paralyzed or being very still in order to effectively pounce on the mouse? It is not quite clear to me.
The standard dream book interpretation would suggest that the mouse represents someone who is gnawing a way at my personal wealth, resources and time. The lizard is symbolic of my base primal needs of sex, food and shelter.
I can actually think of one person in my life that consumes much of my wealth, resources and time. I am his sole means of support and I have very little in my own life in which to share with him. His needs and wants leave me more poor and exhausted.
The lizard just might represent me and the situation, I am experiencing, as I do feel paralyzed, and unable to regain my independence and abundance. The lizard wants to satisfy his base desires and probably eat the mouse. However, the mouse is his spiritual brother and it is not ethical to eat one's brother. Lizard's are not known for being moral or ethical giants. It may be my own higher mind that is binding him and preventing him from taking action or spirit animals live by a different code. It is an interesting paradox. I seem to be in a symbiotic telepathic rapport with both the lizard and the mouse. I know precisely what their simpler consciousness minds are thinking, and feeling.
The other possible interpretation of the dream is to regard the mouse and lizard as animal spirit guides in just the same manner as a Native American might do so. They have revealed themselves to me in response to the meditation and want to give me guidance and advice. Essentially, the lessons they offer are the same as the other interpretation, but with a subtle difference, as animal spirit guides they are teachers, or mentors rather than the lesson itself.
The animals are just another race of peoples in the Native American world view. They are brothers and sisters. Spirit animals are regarded as guides or protectors. There is an affinity relationship between the spirit animal and the person. There is also a concept of power animals. The spirit of an animal could chose use to unite with a person and they both would share in each other abilities, and would have complementary personalities.
Any one of the dream interpretations, that I have outlined here, are acceptable notions to me. They all have aspects that are appealing or satisfying to me. My main interest is getting to the bottom of what is going on in my unconscious. There is where the mysterious spooky stuff lies! I am most often interested in the utilitarian aspects of dream analysis. I want to get an understanding of my own psyche and how to best contend with it. Though, I must admit, everything about the true nature of dreams and dreaming utterly fascinates me.
Well, brother mouse and sister lizard have much to teach me about myself and life. If they are also willing to offer some guidance, protection or power too, I am all for it. Life is pretty tough and I am all in favour of getting some help, or guidance from anyone, anywhere, at any time!
