The dream this morning was a short and simple one. It was tucked at the end of an active night of dreaming and is freshest in my mind, and the easiest to remember. Let’s see what we can glean from it.
In the dream I see a towering rocket ship. This rocket has a mirrored finish and glistens in the noonday sun. It is like many of those spaceships featured in 1950’s sci-fi movies. It is fueled and on the launch pad ready to take off. The ship is on a mission to the moon. It is taking wealthy colonists to live there. It seems in the future only the wealthy can afford the trip to the moon. The low gravity on the moon is its main attraction. People who migrate to the moon live much longer lives and suffer less from the degenerative effects of aging. The moon has become a refuge for retirees, the physically disabled and the dying.
Deep inside the massive rocket ship I see a luxury state room has been specially prepared. A huge man is reclining in a blast-off chair. The man must weigh almost 400 lbs. and the chair was specially built for his huge physique. He has paid a great sum of money to be a passenger on this trip. Tremendous bribes had to be secured in order for him to make this flight. Under normal circumstances this man would not be allowed to fly due to his great weight and his poor heart condition. The physical stress of this flight may quite possibly kill him. It seems a risk he is willing to take. If the man survives the trip he may well extend his life by many years living on the moon. He is fully aware of the seriousness of the situation and has a severe frown on his face knowing he could be dead before even escaping the earth’s atmosphere.
In the room there is a stout blond woman wearing a denim skirt. She is holding the right hand of a little towheaded girl close to her left side. The little girl has a doll dangling from her left hand. The woman is the man’s daughter and the toddler his granddaughter. They are there to say their goodbyes. The woman is in near tears and trying to keep a brave face for her father. This will be the last time she may see him alive and it seems doubtful she will ever visit him on the moon if he should survive.
I see myself standing there in the cabin in a dark uniform with gold stripes down the legs of my pants. I am the ship’s steward. I am there to secure the room for blast-off and escort the woman and her child off the ship. It is at this point that I wake up from the dream.
This dream so reminds me one of the most significant books ever written in the science fiction genre, it was titled, “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” (1966) by Robert A. Heinlein. I had read the book when I was teenager back in the 1970’s. The basic plot was that the moon was a colony of earth and it revolts, and gains it’s independence after a war with earth. In one of the final scenes of the novel we see one of the chief characters has returned to earth. He is there to plead the case for the moon’s independence. Since he has lived so many years on the moon his body has become totally adapted to the moon’s gravity and he is reduced to pathetic looking man lying in stretcher, and breathing hard.
It seems an ironic twist, to me, that in my dream we have a man doing quite the opposite. He is escaping earth for a healthier life of exile on the moon. Another interesting fact should be noted, last night, February 25th, I witnessed a full moon on my drive home from work just before dawn.
I believe a look at the role of the moon in astrology might give us some quality insights into how to further analyze this dream. The moon in astrology is the ruler of Cancer. The moon represents our deepest personal needs and our reactions, and habits, and our unconscious. The Sun acts, but the moon reacts. The moon’s influence reflects how we instinctively react or respond to problems. What do we feel we need for a sense of security? The position of the moon in a person’s natal chart will show the answer. The moon is feminine energy and associated with the mother aspect.
The suggestion here, after a look at the astrology, is my unconscious is really doing some soul searching and trying to come to some intuitive understanding about my current housing situation. I moved out of my brother’s house into the homeless veteran Patriot House. My own sense of home and security and my response to this change of environment, and how I am programmed to emotionally respond to these stressors are all working them selves out deep within my psyche. Some aspects I am consciously aware of, but much of this I am not.
The man in the chair may be symbolic of my own regard to my personal health. On one hand the man is taking some initiative in providing for his own health care. He is desperately hoping to live his remaining years with more value, but his method of getting there comes with a huge price tag. I can wholly identify with the man. I am receiving much greater medical attention in my new situation, but it comes with a trade-off of my personal freedom.
The daughter/mother and her child certainly represent the feminine aspects of the moon in this dream. The woman is contending with her feelings in this instance and struggling with how to appropriately respond. What is true in this dream is a reflection of how I am wrestling with my own emotions in this transition from one housing arraignment to another.
It seems the deeper I delve into the intricacies of this dream the more things come to light. This has been a surprising analysis! As I so often say, “I will ponder this!”
