This morning's dream was short and simple. I could see the bed I sleep in was in the back of a pick up truck. I was sleeping in it and was having a lucid dream within a lucid dream. A raven was making a lot of loud squawking and flying towards me level at some distance down the street. It was morning and a sunny day. Something seemed to lurking behind the tailgate of the pick-up. It was out of view but I could hear it move about. The raven zig-zagged toward me. Its eyes were yellow with black pupils. It flew right up to my face and I could see directly right into it's right eye. The bare skin around that eye was dark and wrinkled. I became startled and woke up.
It was just a few days ago, when on Halloween, I was woke up by an actual raven. It was upset and making a terrible racket outside my window. The pick up was obviously on my mind because my brother hired me to take out all his electrical equipment and clean his truck today. It was all agreed upon I would do it today. So clearly the truck and the raven were still playing on my mind. So for the interest of full disclosure I acknowledge these facts. Still, we can make interesting observations about this dream.
Ravens are the most intelligent of all birds. They are omnivorous crafty tricksters, clever and have so wide a vocal ability that they can even mimic human speech. They have coexisted with humans for thousands of years and have played a significant role in mythology, folklore and literature. They are generally regarded as an ill-omen. Oh! How grand! Not what I like to hear!
So the fact that this raven looks so sickly and stares me right in the eye is just plain disturbing. I feel like I am being confronted to look deeply into something. This bird is confronting and challenging me. In Norse myth The god Odin has two ravens that were his eyes into the world of man. I certainly feel like I have been spied on! In the bible it was the ravens that fed the prophet Elijah in the wilderness. Jesus used the story to teach people to rely on God to provide for them rather than riches. So I am confronted with a whole host of lessons from this dream. So many interpretations to choose from that I don't know what to make of it all. I will need to think on this awhile...
