Wedding Day Dragon

On the night before our wedding I have a dream of a dragon. The location seems to look like some quant medieval village in England. Hakima and my friend Jonathan are with me. We are watching the dragon as it circles over head, it lands on an old stone bridge spanning a river. The three of us run away from the creature to take cover behind a giant walnut tree. The dragon breathes a burst of fire. Curiously, the tree takes the brunt of the blast aimed directly at us and it becomes blackened, but not consumed, by the fire. The dragon becomes annoyed and he takes to the air.

Somehow, almost wordlessly, I communicate to Jonathan to get my lady away to safety and the two of them slip away quickly, without being seen by the dragon. The dragon is flying high overhead and looking to pounce again for another attack. I walk out onto the bridge as I carefully consider all my options. I glance down and through narrow slits by my feet I can see the river flowing below. The section directly under the bridge is shallow and about 1 foot deep. I take sanctuary there hoping that dragon cannot see me, or at least that being in the water will offer me some level of protection, from the dragon's deadly breath.

This is when I awake from the dream. a dream about dragons comes with a host of dream symbolism. This was an important dream. dragon are mythic symbols of power. They have associations with the serpent and devil in western culture. All across Europe there is the story of St. George the dragon slayer. To conquer the dragon is to have victory over sin. The dragon also is synonymous with the image of the phoenix rising. There is an aspect of sexuality in it's nature and it symbolizes the raw intimidating energy of the collective unconscious.

In the Orient the dragon is regarded as a symbol of good luck and fortune. It seems in all an auspicious omen. I am confronted by my own demon of sorts. The proximity of the water is very telling. Water is the emotional element. It is here to remind me of the depths of my emotional life and it's importance to my overall well being. I feel a sense of security with the presence of the river. The water will counter the flame and protect me from getting burned. The dragon is frustrated by his attempt to destroy me. The bridge and the water are obstacles to him. I am grateful for them.

In the end I am not sure what to make of this dream. I feel it has major importance and significance for me, of that, I am certain. For now we have dutifully recorded it and will wait to see if, at some future time, it will reveal it's inner secrets and meanings.
