A Comedy with my Dark Side
The dream tonight takes place in an corporate office banking building. On the ground floor at street level I see a luxurious marble lobby. I am here with three other young guys. The young men are in their early twenties. Two of them are tall and skinny, and one is a short fat kid. They all look like they are right out of high school. I am the adult leader and mastermind of this group. We are not here to steal money, but we have been hired to steal information. We are about to engage in corporate espionage. We have been supplied with the means to secretly enter the building and bypass all the security by our employer.
The plan is for myself to pose as the front desk lobby security guard. My three accomplices will go through the upper level offices and have been instructed what to look for and how to get their hands on it. We are suppose to get in and out undetected and deliver the goods to our corporate masters. As you might guess things go horribly awry with comic results.
Basically, my team takes way longer than planned to get the desired items on our list. The plan was to be out of the building by 3:00 am. I am in the lobby in a panic. It is now 5:30 am and the boys have not made their way to the lobby to exit the building. The building employees will be showing up any minute now! I yell at them over a hidden microphone in my lapel to hurry up.
Now the first employee shows up. I am doing my damnedest to keep her away from seeing the lobby elevator doors because my lads are going to be coming out any second to make good their escape. I am doing my best to look calm and to not sweat in the three piece suit that is my security guard uniform. Then another woman enters the building! I manage to steer the ladies away from a direct view of the elevators by drawing their attention to a museum display in the lobby. The display is off in an adjacent room out of view from the elevators. They ladies examine what look to be antique Mardi Gras masks from the renaissance and get into a deep discussion about them.
All of a sudden I see out of the corner of my eye the boys tumble out of the elevator and I give them a jerk of my head to get back in the elevator to hide. I position my body to obscure the ladies view to the elevators and the boys take note of what I am doing to make a mad dash down the hall to a side exit. Whew! Mission accomplished!!! I wake up.
This was a funny dream and had me waking up laughing. I have many strange dreams, but it is seldom that I have such blatantly funny dreams. This one was a nice change. My unconscious often has a strange dark sense of humour. This time it was straight up funny!
This dream felt like watching a scene in a movie. There were long moments of dramatic tension punctuated with incidents of funny physical comedy and one liners to add levity. It was in the tradition of the best Hollywood blockbusters.
I enjoy a good belly laugh often. People often get embarrassed because I get too jolly and laugh too loudly. My playful side needs to come out more I think. Life has been too damn serious and defeating in recent years and months.
There is a definite longing in me to find some child like joy again. The boys and I are out to steal some laughs along with those secrets. I hate to admit it but my brothers and I did a lot of break-ins when we were boys. My insatiable curiosity got me into so much trouble! I never stole anything. Dad whipped these tendencies out of me, but as we know, we all have a dark side.
There is a criminal side to me that my conscious self supresses and keeps in check. There is a wild passionate, rebellious barbarian deep inside me that hates living by rules and wants to channel Genghis Khan or Black Beard. That guy would be very scary if he ever got lose. The trick to staying out of prison is to try to come to terms with my dark side and use him as an ally rather than cutting him lose or out. The bible says, " Be wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove." This suggests that it is possible to be not given over to one extreme or the other and it is desirable to take the best aspects of our dark and light personas, and achieve a happy and useful medium with them. C.G. Jung said this is possible, but it takes a superhuman effort, and very few people achieve such an integration of the two aspects. It usually takes a crisis or great stressful event for the two to come to some mutual understanding or agreement. If a person succeeds it is difficult to judge which side is calling the shots. The unconscious is mysterious, unfathomable and uncanny in it's ability to control and influence our behaviours and life. Well, I'm always up for a challenge whether I want to or not it seems! Ha, ha!
