A Resort Planet with Hidden Books
The dream this morning takes place on a small colonized world far from Earth. This is a sparsely populated world. It is a vacation destination for space travellers. I have come here with a large group of people. This planet has only one town on it. The town very much resembles some kind of resort Alpine village in the Alps of Europe. It is completely surrounded by tall snow capped peaks.
Some of the group I am with are staying in a hostel. The hostel is in the centre of town. One half of the building is like a huge house where the guests stay and the other half is a small shopping mall. I leave the hostel and wander around the streets of the village to the outskirts of town. I look up at the rolling hillsides and up at the snow capped mountain peaks. I have been told that this planet has been virtually unexplored and most of it has never been visited by human beings. It is completely unknown what may be out there. I have an intense desire to venture out into it, but instead, I see it is getting dark, and it will be night soon. I decide to walk back toward the hostel and on my way I see a bar filled with locals, tourists and people from our travel group. They are drinking, eating and dancing to loud music. I continue to walk on to my room to sleep. I am not in the mood to party or be sociable.
In the morning I go shopping with several of my young traveling companions in the other half of the building we are staying in. They are two young women and a young guy. They are in their early twenties. They laugh and are eager to explore. They quickly get bored with shopping. We find a obliquely hidden staircase to the basement around a corner. This basement is below the hostel. Down below we find the basement is filled with books on shelves and in boxes. There are hundreds of books and magazines. I paw through them and see they are very old and in different languages like Spanish and English. The two young girls decide to leave out a door up a set of steps that lead to the street. The young guy and I continue to examine the many obscure and fascinating books. I get the sense that these reading materials are hard to come by here, and might even be contraband on this world, which is why they are hiding in this basement, it's that, or the owner is a pack rat, or obsessed collector.
Suddenly, the hostel manager comes down the steps, she has a box in her arms, probably full of more books. She is a tall middle aged woman with dark hair. She is very upset we are in her basement. It is a forbidden area for her guests to be in and she tells us our visit down here will be reflected in our bill with a charge when we check out. This is when I awake from the dream.
This dream leaves me with odd yearnings I did not realize I have. I recently bought an old Steven King book, The Dark Tower, The Gunslinger, in a resale shop. I am rediscovering the joy of reading again after so many years. I used to be an avid reader. Work and life got in the way of continuing my reading habit. I used to explore and escape to other worlds through books when I was younger. It has been many years since I last read any book for pleasure's sake. I had forgotten how much I miss it
Now that the weather here in Northern Michigan has finally turned warm and sunny, and Spring seems to have taken hold, I am wanting to get out to nature in the worst way. It was such a long Winter! There are some themes here that are definitely working themselves out in my unconscious.
I need more books and it is time to get out to nature. My soul needs to see sunlight, green and living things, and books to nourish my imagination. I work every damn day. I could use on off world vacation. My body and mind needs to heal from the continuous grind of work and daily life.
